Happy Makara Sankranti

Tried and tasted by Nivedita
Hi All,
Wishing every one a very happy Makara Sankranti. I know I am late to wish here. But wanted to wish you all with my special Sankranti food.
My many blogger friends have already posted about the importance of this wonderful festival which is first festival of the new year.

Enjoy the reading in,
Nitya's
Srivalli's
and
Jagruti's

Here is the food which is must on this day and I wait for this for the whole year. The same food never tastes so good on any other day.

Here goes the menu:
First is the traditional 'YELLU BELLA' (Sesame seeds and Jaggery) which is a mixture of dry coconut pieces, roasted sesame seeds, small pieces of jaggery, roasted peanuts. This we exchange in the evening with all the relatives and friends. We take blessings from the elders.
Second is the crispy Bajraof Sajji rotti : which is specially prepared for this and these rottis are thinner than a paper.
Third is Avarekalu pallye or Surti paapdi masala
And fourth one is Badanekai bajji(Baingan ka bharta) which is prepared adding boiled carrot, fresh green chana to the normal baingan ka bharta
And the sweets we prepare for this festival:

Enjoy the day and have a wonderful year ahead. May God bless you all with the best things in your life.
Wishing one more time a very happy Makara Sankramana to everyone.

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi and Modak

Tried and tasted by Nivedita
Hi All,
WISHING EVERY ONE A VERY HAPPY GANESH CHATURTHI
(The above Ganesha pen stand is given in my younger daughter's school for the festival)
Usually we make Kadabu on this day. But as I used to make Modaks in UAE, I thought of making only modaks this time. 21 modaks are offered to Lord Ganesha with other sweets.
This recipe is for 21 modaks.
For dough:
All purpose flour (APF) - 1/4 cup
Wheat flour - 3/4 cup
Salt a pinch
Oil - 1 tbsp
Knead with little water to make a soft dough. Keep it aside.

To fry
Oil

For stuffing,
Fresh coconut, grated - 1 cup
Jaggery, powdered - 1 cup
Dalia powder - 2 tbsp(kadale parapu or puthani)
Cardamom  powder - 1 tsp
Salt a pinch

Mix everything under stuffing, in a M/W safe bowl and cook on HIGH for 1 minute. No M/W, no problem, keep the mixture on heat for a minute in a vessel.
Divide the stuffing into equal 21 balls.
Same way,
Divide the dough into small and equal 21 balls.
Take one dough ball in your palm and stuff it with coconut and jaggery mix. Give the desired shape(usually its round with folded lines on the top, but you can give kadabu shape also, you can see in the above photo). Repeat with remaining dough and the stuff.
Keep oil to heat. Fry these modaks in batches till golden color.
Offer with other sweets to Lord Ganesha.

HAPPY NAGA PANCHAMI

Tried and tasted by Nivedita
Hi All,
Wishing every one a very HAPPY NAGA PANCHAMI,
I was busy in making laddoos as it s the main neviadyam we offer to God (Snake) on this day. It is very popular in North Karantaka, and its mainly celebrated by ladies. Playing swings which are tied to big and huge trees is very common in the festival. There will be competition for it. They tie a big laddo infront and one has to swing high in the air to take it by mouth. Its a real fun. But now a days its played only in villages as we, staying in cities are more busy to catch the money while swinging from office to home!!
THIS  is last year's post. My this year's laddoos will appear by tomorrow or day after with recipes.

Ugadi - Day 2

Tried and tasted by Nivedita
Hi All,
Ugadi is celebrated one day before also i.e  on New moon day(Amavasya)! That was yesterday, and I have already posted the food we prepared. And today is the main festival. Usually, Sevian payasam is prepared on this day. But as this is very common in our home, mom prepared the Peanut karchi kai. (The recipe will be posted in few days)And the main prasad will be the sweet called Bevu-Bella. The meaning of this is Bevu means neem leaves which is bitter in taste but good for health. And Bella means sweet. Today it is offered to the God, praying that our life should have both the experiences. We pray to God to give us strength to face equally, all good and bad things in our life.

Bevu Bella sweet is prepared with  Dalia dal, sugar, fresh neem flowers and dry fruits.
Take equal parts of dalia(puthani) dal and sugar. Dry grind it to make powder. Mix the neem flowers and dry fruits.
Today, we got the first batch of raw mangoes from our trees. So offering the same to God as Neivedyam.

I will be back with regular food.
And Thank you everyone for the wishes on my first day Ugadi post.
Keep smiling,
